Buying Guide
The final touchpoint in your customer’s checkout experience.
A reliable receipt printer keeps lines moving and handles daily transaction volume without jamming. Choosing the wrong printer leads to paper jams, faded receipts, driver conflicts, and customer frustration.
1. Print Width: 58mm vs 80mm
Thermal receipt printers come in two standard paper widths. The choice fundamentally affects receipt content layout, readability, and ongoing consumable costs.
Best for: Cafes, food trucks, low-cost operations.
Best for: Retail, grocery, restaurants, pharmacies.
Recommendation: For most retail environments, choose 80mm. The wider format accommodates item descriptions, QR codes, and logos without looking cramped. 58mm is only recommended where counter space is extremely limited. View 80mm POS Printers.
2. Print Speed Throughput
Print speed is measured in millimeters per second (mm/s). Faster printing equals shorter customer wait times.
Important Note: Speed ratings are based on standard text. Printing heavy graphics (Logos, QR codes, 2D Barcodes) will slow down actual output by 20-30%.
3. Auto-Cutter vs Tear-Bar
Auto-Cutter (Guillotine)
Mechanically cuts the receipt automatically. Leaves a clean edge and speeds up workflow.
- • Essential for high-volume checkout.
- • Rated for 1-2 million cuts.
- • Supports "Partial Cut" (leaves a center tab).
Manual Tear-Bar
Uses a stationary serrated metal edge. Cashier must rip the receipt downwards.
- • Lower cost, simpler mechanism.
- • Slower manual workflow.
- • Suitable only for low-volume stalls.
4. Interface and Connection
The printer must physically connect to your POS terminal and Cash Drawer. Modern printers often feature "Triple Interfaces".
- USB: The standard for direct 1-to-1 connections between POS terminal and printer. Plug and play.
- LAN (Ethernet): Essential for network printing (e.g., sharing one printer across 3 iPad registers, or sending tickets to a remote kitchen printer).
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: Required for mobile tablet POS setups where running a cable is impossible.
5. Driver Support & Command Sets
Before purchasing, verify software compatibility. Most modern POS software bypasses Windows drivers entirely and communicates directly using raw Hex commands.
- ESC/POS (The Industry Standard): Developed by Epson. If your POS app supports ESC/POS, nearly any modern thermal printer will work natively.
- Windows GDI Drivers: Some legacy Windows POS software uses standard Windows Spooler drivers (like a normal home printer). Verify the manufacturer provides a certified Windows 10/11 driver.
- Android SDK / SPP: For Android tablets, ensure the printer supports Bluetooth SPP profile or has an available developer SDK.

6. Kitchen Printers & Restaurant Workflow
A kitchen printer (BOH - Back of House) must survive heat, grease, and humidity that would destroy a standard front-counter printer.
Must operate reliably in 40°C+ ambient temperatures near fryers and ovens.
Built-in loud alarm to notify chefs of new tickets over noisy kitchen environments.
Front-exit paper paths and top covers to prevent oil and liquid ingress into the print head.
7. Durability & Maintenance
- Print Head Life (TPH): Rated in kilometers. A 100km to 150km rating is standard. At 50 transactions/day, this equates to roughly 5-10 years of reliable printing.
- Wall Mount Options: Look for printers with bottom keyholes for wall mounting, saving valuable counter space.
- Drop-in Paper Loading: Avoid printers that require manual paper threading. Clamshell "drop-in and close" designs save cashiers seconds during mid-rush paper changes.
