Unlike consumer smartphones, handheld PDAs are built to survive drops, resist dust and water, scan barcodes at high speed, and run for full 8-12 hour shifts on a single charge. This definitive guide covers everything you need to know before deploying a device fleet.
1. Barcode Scanning Engine
The scanning engine is the most important component of a handheld PDA. It determines what barcodes you can read, how fast, and from what distance.

Recommendation for 2026: Always choose 2D
Even if your current barcodes are 1D, 2D engines read QR codes from mobile screens, package labels with DataMatrix codes, and digital receipts. The cost difference is negligible. View 2D Handheld PDAs.
2. Android Version & Lifecycle
Most modern handheld PDAs run Android. The version dictates MDM (Mobile Device Management) compatibility, enterprise security, and the device's usable lifespan.
Android 11
Minimum acceptable standard. Security patches are nearing end-of-support in late 2024. Not recommended for new deployments.
Android 13
Excellent baseline. Fully supports modern enterprise mobility features (MDM enrollment, kiosk mode, zero-touch provisioning).
Android 14+
Latest available architecture. Offers the longest term security patch support and maximum API compatibility for next-gen apps.
Android Enterprise Recommended (AER)
Google’s certification for business devices. Prioritize AER-certified PDAs, which guarantee minimum hardware specs, zero-touch enrollment compatibility, and a strict commitment to 5+ years of security updates.
3. Ruggedness (IP & Drop Specs)
Consumer phones shatter in a warehouse. Handheld PDAs must survive drops onto concrete, dust, and temperature extremes.
IP Rating (Ingress Protection)
Physical Tolerance
- Drop Spec 1.2m: Minimum for retail. Survives drops from standard checkout counter height.
- Drop Spec 1.5m - 1.8m: Standard for warehouse. Survives drops by walking workers or from ladders.
- Operating Temp: 0°C to 50°C for general use. Ensure explicitly stated -20°C limits if deploying in freezer/cold-storage environments.
4. Battery & Power Strategy
In a continuous warehouse operation, a dead battery means lost productivity. Enterprise PDAs handle power differently than consumer phones.
High Capacity (4000-6000mAh)
Ensure the device carries a minimum of 4000mAh for a standard 8-hour shift. 6000mAh+ is required for continuous trigger-scanning over 12-hour shifts.
Hot-Swappable Battery
A built-in secondary backup battery keeps the OS and screen active for ~60 seconds while the worker physically swaps a dead main battery for a fresh one. Zero reboot time.
Infrastructure Planning: Consider multi-bay charging cradles (e.g., 5-slot device chargers or 4-slot battery chargers) early in your procurement process to keep fleet batteries cycled.

- Screen Size: 4-5 inches for one-handed intensive picking (often equipped with a pistol grip button). 5.5-6 inches+ (slate format) for touch-heavy management and retail apps.
- Brightness (Nits): 350-400 nits is fine indoors. Requires 500+ nits for outdoor/sunlight readable applications (delivery/yard management).
- Touch Technology: Ensure the capacitance screen supports "Glove Mode" (crucial for winter/cold-storage) and "Wet-touch" (prevents water droplets from causing phantom clicks).
- Physical Keys: Pure touch-screens slow down high-volume scanning. PDAs should feature dedicated side scan triggers, customizable function keys, and volume rockers.
7. WMS & Software Ecosystem
Hardware is useless without seamless integration into your existing systems (SAP, Manhattan, Oracle, Blue Yonder).
The simplest integration. The OS converts scanned barcode data into artificial keystrokes. It works instantly with web browsers, terminal emulators (Telnet), or any 3rd party Android app without writing code.
If you develop custom Android apps, request the manufacturer's SDK. This allows your app to bypass the text cursor, capture scanner data via Broadcast Intents silently, and control scanner lights/beeps programmatically.
Verify the PDA is certified for your Mobile Device Management platform (e.g., SOTI MobiControl, MS Intune, Workspace ONE) to push apps, lock down UI (Kiosk mode), and restrict OS settings remotely.
